The Pattern

Behavioural addictions rarely announce themselves the way substance dependency does.

There's no smell of alcohol to give it away, and for a long time the pattern can live almost entirely in private: a phone, a browser tab, a relationship no one else sees the inside of.

That's what lets them run for years before anyone, including you, calls it what it is.

Signs to notice

A private reflection, not a diagnostic checklist

Not every point here needs to apply, but this may resonate with you if:

  • A behaviour, whether gambling, sex, pornography or an intense relationship dynamic, is how you cope when things get hard.
  • You've tried to stop or cut back before. It held for a while, until it didn't.
  • It's cost you money, time, someone's trust or a relationship, and you kept going anyway.
  • Shame makes it harder to talk about.
  • What started as occasional has become a compulsion that runs your decisions.
The underlying pattern

Compulsive behaviour is a reward-circuit adaptation, not a moral failing.

Sex, gambling, pornography and love addiction activate the same dopamine reward pathways as substance dependency. The behaviour becomes the fastest way to regulate difficult emotion, and eventually your brain stops treating it as optional. Shame usually deepens the cycle rather than interrupting it, as hiding it becomes as compulsive as the behaviour itself.

What's driving it

01

Biological

Repetition strengthens the same dopamine and reward circuitry activated by substance use. Over time, the anticipation of the behaviour can feel as compulsive as the behaviour itself.

02

Relational

Compulsive patterns don't emerge in isolation. How you learned to handle closeness, trust, or being let down early on tends to shape what you become vulnerable to and how well you've learned to keep it hidden.

03

Nervous system

The behaviour typically numbs or discharges your nervous system with no other reliable way to regulate discomfort, disappointment or emptiness.

The Ascendant 7/21 Method™

Every discipline is active. Three lead the clinical work.

All seven disciplines of the Ascendant 7/21 Method™ run through every program, including yours. Three lead the clinical work because of how directly they address the attachment and regulation patterns underneath the behaviour. The remaining four create strong body and mind foundations for the deep work happening in the three core disciplines.

Where the work starts

Psychological

Rewiring the response

Attachment-based therapy works directly on how you learned to handle connection, intimacy, and trust in the first place. Neurofeedback trains the brain to interrupt the compulsive cycle and rebuild impulse control from the inside.

Somatic

Regulating the system

Physical nervous system regulation gives you another way to process and discharge what you're feeling.

Medical

Beyond withdrawal

Rather than the acute withdrawal management substance addiction requires, the focus here is psychiatric assessment, screening for what else might be going on, and medication support where it's clinically indicated.

Running underneath

Physical

Structured movement rebuilds routine and a healthier relationship with impulse and reward.

Nutritional

Targeted nutrition supports the neurotransmitter and dopamine regulation disrupted by the compulsive cycle.

Naturopathic

Longer-term protocols support nervous system and hormonal stability well beyond your time on the estate.

Energetic

A combination of Traditional Chinese Medicine practices, academic kinesiology, Japanese reiki, and subconscious re-patterning work through the use of tools from positive psychology.

Program mechanics

How it's structured

6 phases, each with a distinct clinical purpose.

You arrive and meet your clinical team. We'll guide you through a comprehensive medical, psychiatric, and psychological assessment to understand your behavioural addiction and nervous system state. This establishes baseline safety and a clear formulation to guide the rest of your program.

From here, the work turns to what the compulsive pattern has always been protecting you from. Attachment-focused sessions take you beneath the behaviour itself, to the experience it first developed in response to.

This is where we work directly on the compulsive pattern, whether it centres on one behaviour or several, treated as a single underlying drive rather than separate problems. You will build new ways of regulating difficult emotions, so the addictive pattern has nowhere left to relocate to.

Where the pattern has caused relationship ruptures or broken trust, this is where you begin addressing them. If rebuilding trust at home is part of your plan, an optional partner or family session happens here.

You spend this phase rebuilding a sense of self that isn't organised around the addictive behaviour or around concealing it, working toward what you actually want your life, and your relationships to look like now that you're choosing this for yourself.

Your final week turns toward what happens after you leave. A relapse-prevention and 12-week aftercare plan is built alongside your clinical team, with any pharmacological support reviewed and adjusted, before you go.

Ascendant Bali program

Behavioural addiction recovery runs a minimum of 4 weeks, the same clinical baseline used across every addiction program at Ascendant Bali. Rewiring a compulsive pattern safely, and building healthy coping behaviours durable enough to hold once you're back in daily life, takes longer than a shorter program allows. 5–8 week programs are also available where a longer consolidation period is clinically appropriate.

Credibility

The numbers and the clinician

Based on client feedback collected in June 2026

70%

of the people we treat for addiction also experience a co-occurring mental health condition. Your program is built to treat both together, not as separate tracks.

96%

of clients report significant improvements in mood, clarity and overall wellbeing after completing the program.

100%

of clients say they wish they had done it sooner.

Every program is clinically led by registered medical practitioners and psychologists, with over a decade of trauma informed practice.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Behavioural addiction, specifically

These often overlap and share the same underlying attachment and reward-circuit patterns, so your program is built around your specific presentation rather than a fixed category. Many clients experience more than one pattern at once.

Yes. Our program is highly integrative, intensive and evidence-based, built around daily one-on-one clinical work rather than peer-led group meetings. If you'd like to also access 12-step or group-based support, such as AA or Gamblers Anonymous, we can arrange this alongside your program, either online or through groups in Bali. This is entirely optional and only happens if you're comfortable with the reduced discretion that group settings involve, since many clients find that shared experience genuinely helps dispel shame.

Only if you choose to tell them. Complete discretion is built into the program, and involving a partner or family member in a session happens only with your agreement, typically in week three if needed.

Both. The clinical approach is the same regardless of severity: attachment-based therapy, somatic regulation and neurofeedback for impulse control, calibrated to your specific pattern.

Yes. Many clients come to Ascendant Bali before a behaviour has caused visible damage, precisely because they can see where it is heading. Early intervention is often more effective, not less urgent.

You leave with a personalised aftercare plan developed with your clinical team, with options for extended stays or ongoing remote support depending on your circumstances.
